The Australian Government, through Export Finance Australia, is supporting the development of a landmark pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City.
Export Finance Australia has provided a guarantee to support an 800 billion Vietnamese Dong (AUD 40 million) loan provided by HSBC Bank (Vietnam) Ltd. for Vietnamese nutrition company Nutifood to develop the vital infrastructure.
The project will connect Bach Dang Wharf Park with the rapidly evolving Thu Thiem New Urban Area and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
This transaction is a milestone under the Australian Government’s Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, demonstrating Australia’s commitment to mobilising investment for priority infrastructure in the region.
The Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Ms Gillian Bird, took part in a signing ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, attended by Mr Tran Thanh Hai Chairman, Nutifood Nutrition Food Joint Stock Company, Mr Tran Bao Minh, Nutifood Vice Chairman; Mr Tim Evans, CEO, HSBC Vietnam; and Charith Amarasinghe, EFA Country Lead.
“Australia is a steadfast, reliable, and trusted partner, who has supported Vietnam's economic development since the 1970s. This bridge will be a tangible example of Australia’s commitment to supporting the development of high-quality infrastructure in Vietnam, as part of Australia’s support for Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth.”
The Australian Consul-General in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms Kate Wallace, also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the local impact of the project and the strength of the commercial ties involved.
“Ho Chi Minh City is a dynamic hub for Vietnam’s economic growth, and this bridge will help drive growth even further and become another symbol of the enduring friendship between Australia and Vietnam. It is particularly pleasing to see this partnership involve Nutifood, a company with strong and growing links to Australia through its joint venture to produce GippsNature products using premium Australian dairy.”
Export Finance Australia is Australia’s export credit agency, which helps facilitate major overseas investment and infrastructure development that benefits both Australia and its regional partners, including Vietnam.
