Governor-General marks historic 45th anniversary of relations with Vietnam
At the invitation of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove will mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Vietnam during a State Visit from 23 – 25 May.
His Excellency’s State Visit is the second by an Australian Governor-General and will include more than 20 events over three days.
Following the signing of a Strategic Partnership between Australia and Vietnam in March, the Governor-General’s visit will highlight the growing bilateral relationship underpinned by strong education, business, defence, and people-to-people links.
In Hanoi, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove will meet members of the Australian community before receiving a ceremonial welcome by the President, His Excellency Mr Tran Dai Quang. The Governor-General will meet with the Prime Minister, His Excellency Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc; the General Secretary of the Community Party, Mr Nguyen Phu Trong; and Chairperson, Her Excellency Mrs Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, following a wreath laying ceremony at the Monument of National Heroes and Martyrs.
As part of a wider bilateral program in Ho Chi Minh City, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove will join senior Vietnamese representatives to celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Their Excellencies will also visit Vietnamese Peacekeepers in recognition of the growing defence relationship, and will acknowledge the strong education and business links between both countries at RMIT University.
Details of the Governor-General’s program will be made available at www.gg.gov.au.
