Australia helps Vietnam train female sports journalists
Twenty Vietnamese female sports journalists working for different media platforms are attending a week-long training on sport journalism in Hanoi from today, funded by the Australian Government. The training is designed to help female journalists carve out careers in the traditionally male-dominated industry of sports journalism, promoting gender equality in media and sports, as well as women's participation in sports.
The program, which is part of the Australian Government’s Women in News and Sport (WINS) Initiative, focuses on three areas – providing skills training and industry knowledge; improving multi-platform content creation; and networking with other women sports journalists, media and sport organisations.
“Promoting gender equality and empowerment is one of the top priorities of the Australian Government in Vietnam. I hope that with the skills, knowledge and professional networks gained through this training, our participants will progress their careers and standing in this field,” said Australian Ambassador HE Mr Craig Chittick.
“I believe this WINS workshop will also help sports journalists place greater emphasis on covering women’s sports, as well as promoting women’s participation in sport and sport administration,” said the Ambassador.
“Female sports journalists play an important role in many media organisations, including Vietnam Television’s Sports Department, but training opportunities for them in Vietnam are limited. Therefore, we strongly welcome and thank the Australian Government for this important initiative,” said Mr Phan Ngoc Tien, Director of the Sports Department, Vietnam Television.
The Australian Government in partnership with ABC International Development is delivering the Women in News and Sport initiative across four countries in the Indo-Pacific region, namely Vietnam, Fiji, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea throughout 2016-17.
