59 Vietnamese scholars and professionals win
Australian Endeavour Awards in 2011 worth VND 200 billion

A group of 59 high-achieving Vietnamese scholars and professionals have won prestigious Australian Endeavour Awards for study, research and professional development in Australia in 2011. The total value of these awards is up to AUD 9.8 million, equivalent to VND 200 billion. Thirty three scholars were presented with their awards at a function held at the Australian Ambassador’s residence in Hanoi on 14 January 2011.

The Australian Endeavour Awards are prestigious merit-based competitive scholarships for high-achieving candidates in the Asia-Pacific region. They develop leadership, research and academic excellence and build linkages between Australia and other Asia-Pacific countries. Vietnamese applicants have performed exceptionally well, receiving the highest number of awards of any South East Asian country. Vietnam won the most highly competitive postgraduate awards, surpassing candidates from much larger countries.

Most notably, Vietnamese candidates won five prestigious Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Endeavour Awards, from a total of only twenty in the world. This is a testament to the calibre and initiative of Vietnamese scholars.

• Ms Bui Thu Thuy, Deputy Director General, Department of Sport, Entertainment, and Economic Information (VTV3), Vietnam Television will undertake her PhD at the University of Queensland, examining how public distance education TV channels develop effective programmes for audiences, especially for those living in rural areas.

• Mr Do Thanh Hai, Research Fellow of Centre for Political & Security Studies, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam to undertake his doctorate research at the Australia National University on security and stability in the South China Sea.

• Mr Le Hong Hiep, Lecturer of Faculty of International Relations, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City will undertake his PhD at University of New South Wales. His research will examine the impacts of Vietnam’s transition to a market economy on recent transformations in Sino-Vietnamese relation as well as the responses of Vietnam to the development of China as a global power.

• Ms Bui Thi Bich Lien, a judicial reform expert, will undertake her PhD research at Monash University. Her research will explore the use of informal dispute resolutions in Vietnam and their interaction with the formal legal system, and aims to develop a model that could improve informal dispute resolution in Vietnam.

• Ms Nguyen Quynh Anh, lecturer in Health Economics Department, Hanoi School of Public Health, will pursue her PhD on health economics at University of Queensland. Her research will compare the cost-effectiveness of different interventions and will make recommendations on how best to implement adolescent reproductive health education in Vietnam.

Technical skills acquired through vocational education are essential to Vietnam’s economic development. Australian vocational qualifications are recognised world-wide as responsive to the needs of modern industries. This year, Vietnamese students won five Endeavour Vocational Awards for studies in hospitality management, building technology and early childhood education.

“The 2011 Endeavour awardees are outstanding scholars and potential leaders in their individual fields. I am confident that, after their return from Australia, they will apply their new skills and knowledge and experiences to contribute to Vietnam’s development” the Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, HE Mr Allaster Cox said.

The Endeavour Awards also provide opportunities for Australians to undertake research and professional development in Vietnam. Later this year three Australians will take up Endeavour Awards for research and cooperation with Vietnamese organisations.
